Is it possible to self-study music? How do I go about it?

The reason I ask this question is because I am very passionate about studing music. However, most of the music schools in my local area are quite expensive and I simply can’t afford them with all my financial obligations. This has made it impossible for me to enroll in the classes. I have tried to study music on my own but the challenge is that I do not know where to begin or what to study. I am also concerned that self-study might not give me good study skills and I might not end up learning a lot.

Yes of course. The internet provides a lot of opportunities for learning. If you want to take up music studies, there are so many online resources you can use.

First and foremost, you can take advantage of YouTube videos. There are so many people who teach music on YouTube. A great example is Yale Music Theory Course. All you need to do is identify a channel that offers what you are looking for and begin watching the videos. There is a great chance you will get very good skills for studying because most of the videos are very well organized and structured. Some of the tutors provide information on how to take the classes and even offer some practical assignments to enable you to have something to work on after every video. Another great thing about YouTube videos is the fact that you will not have to worry too much about what you need to study since there are so many channels offering different lessons.

Another great approach to music studying is reading e-books. There are numerous e-books that provide information on how to read and arrange music notes among others. This is a very great way to learn music especially if you are interested in composing music.

There is also the option of applying for online courses. Unlike traditional music schools, online courses are so much affordable and very flexible. You can take the classes whenever you want and even better, you get to take the classes from the comfort of your own home. However, before you decide to take online classes, it is very important for you to do some research to identify the best online courses. Compare different courses, read customer reviews and compare prices to ensure you get the best deal.

Last but not least, you can learn music from friends and family members. For instance, if you want to learn how to play a musical instrument and you have a friend or a family member who plays the instrument, you can ask them to teach you. In most cases, they will not charge you for the lessons and you will end up learning so much because you can get the lessons anytime you need. However, make sure the person teaching you has some musical background. This is important because you are more likely to learn important skills from an expert compared to a self-taught musician.
