The structure of Methanol (CH₃OH) is shown below. This structure contains 2 lone pair of electrons on the oxygen (highlighted in red). Electron configuration of oxygen, Oxygen = 8 = 1s2, 2s2, 2px2, 2py1, 2pz1There are six electrons valence shell of oxygen, among these six electrons, two unpaired electrons and are involved in the formation of a covalent bond with the hydrogen and the carbon, while the remaining 4 electrons are in pairs (that is to say, 2s2, 2px2) exist as lone pairs.
