Before the Industrial revolution, the society was largely patriarchal, the men had the leading role in society, and were also those who were in charge of all the major places. After the industrial revolution, this was slowly changing. With that said, women were not forced to work in a factory or something similar, that had to take care of the children and cook the meals and be housewives in general.
