Leonardo Da Vinci's inspiration for his flying machine, was the model of birds and other animals, and winged. He imagined the people to be able to fly through the sky as these animals. The pilot would lie face down on the contraption and pedal to power the wings, which to a large extent resembled those of a bat. However, no person would be able to generate enough power to lift the machine off the ground.
