I am an international student studying in the US, am I eligible for fafsa student loans?

Does anybody have an idea? Kindly help because I am in need of financial aid to complete my studies. I am a new student admitted to a university in the United States and I even don’t know how to make a loan application and if I fit in student federal loans program. I have a green card; but does it increase my eligibility to get fafsa student loans? If yes guide me on how to apply for a student loan. I am ready to apply for Stafford loan to save my financial situation. The University of Pennsylvania in which I am admitted lacks a clear admission policy for international students.

Every citizen and non-citizen of the United States who owns a valid social security number is eligible for a student loan from FASFA. Don’t just assume that you cannot get aid because you are a non-citizen; check with your college financial aid office to get more information on eligibility. There is a category of eligible noncitizen and the most common group being someone with a green card and those moving to the U.S as a permanent resident, see student citizenship status on FAFSA. Pennsylvania University is one of the universities that ensure all its students regardless of their citizenship receive financial aid in the form of a job on campus and institutional grant money which students are not allowed to pay back.

As a green card holder, you can render your application for Stafford loan which has very low-interest rates and is easy to qualify for. There is no credit check required and you are given a six months grace period following your graduation or cessation of classes. This type of loan exists in two forms; the subsidized Stafford loan and the unsubsidized Stafford loan. Begin by applying for a subsidized Stafford loan and once you get a notification of approval of the need-based subsidized Stafford loans, you are allowed to apply for the unsubsidized Stafford loan funds above the subsidized funds. You are required to complete a Master Promissory Note from the lender; this document keeps the fine print of the loan, the repayment, terms and conditions governing the loan. Information on the repayment is given and payback schedule is drawn which will begin six months after graduation.

Wondering how you can access the loans? Here are steps to follow when applying for a student loan. First you must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to qualify for any type of student loan in the United States. FAFSA is always available on 1 st January each year, list the school you go to using the federal school code to enable the school to download your data. Different schools have different procedures when it comes to loan application. Ask your school for more information about the paperwork to be filled, the deadlines and terms, and conditions.

In case you face a financial problem and fail to repay the loan, you are advised to apply for a loan consolidation which will help you reduce the repayment to one manageable monthly bill. Federal loans for students are the best choice if the federal financial aid fails, it is safe and dependable and will enable you to realize your potential.

To maintain your eligibility for any student aid at the United States, always remember to file the FAFSA every year. Apply for grants and scholarships given a chance. Do not fear to borrow direct subsidized loans which will then give you a chance get unsubsidized loans. Consider using other loans too but first, compare the costs and benefits.

I am a beneficiary of the student federal loans. I applied for the Stafford loan in my first year at the university and received the loan despite being a noncitizen of the United States. At first, I thought the loans were strictly for the citizens but with the help of my school, I received the federal loan. I filled out the FAFSA as required and I was taken through entrance counseling. The entrance counseling entails reading through text about the loan and attending an in-person presentation to learn the responsibilities of taking the loan. You are eligible for a loan in the United States if you are a refugee, a victim of human trafficking, battered immigrant or a permanent holder of the US “green card.”

I wish you the best in your endeavor. Follow the required steps and you will receive the loan for your study here in the United States.

Best of luck!
