Depends on what you are teaching and where. Most states require that the primary and secondary (elementary, middle and high school) teachers in public schools hold a college degree, specifically a bachelor's degree in Sciences of the Education. This is a (approximately) four-year degree, although it may be difficult to complete in four years, due to the student teaching requirement. Community colleges in general require that their teachers have at least a Masters Degree. Four-year colleges and Universities tend to hire teachers, primarily among those who have doctoral studies, or the highest possible degree in those fields where the terminal degree is called something other than a phd.
