Read the excerpt from "Mother Tongue." Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. How does Tan build a central idea of her story in the excerpt? Tan discusses her thoughts about language to build the idea that the English language does not have words to match some Chinese terms. Tan discusses her relationship with her mother to build the idea that mothers and daughters in all cultures often have misunderstandings. Tan discusses her mother’s use of English to build the idea that a form of language can be purposeful and meaningful even if it is nonstandard. Tan discusses the English language to build the idea that there is a lack of appropriate synonyms for the word “broken.”

To do acting as a career, you usually need 5 grades a-D or more. Expressive Arts subjects are usually preferred as well as the theatre or the Dance, or the Media. For most universities, when It comes to the performance, that usually look more on the talents or experiences in place of degree. Most appreciate that although their students may not be very academic you can have a good creative ability. If you have a background in drama/theater club, then make it known in your interview! When you are applying for a performance course, you will usually submit your application and will be invited to attend an interview/test. The interview is so that they can get a better understanding of what you are (personality/behavior) and of the hearing to judge your talent and suitability for the course. All in all, don't worry too much about their qualifications - if achieved simply the average of the marks don't worry, just make sure that you have the talent and confidence to blow them away in your interview/test!Good luck!Lizzy x
