I think the answer is: for the purchase of shares of the companyBy the purchase of a fixed amount of shares, that the investor automatically became a part-owner of the company. For most companies, every 4 months, the company could announce the amount of dividends that are delivered to the shareholders. The amount of dividends that the owners receive would be according to the percentage of shares they own.
