The abacus dates back to between 2,700 and 2,400 BCE (over 4,000 years ago) and was developed in Sumeria. In reality, it is acalculating help and not an automatic device. Originally it may have been used by the warehouse manager, the dealers andgovernment officials that are needed to perform basic calculations. Thesystem uses a number of stones (or beads) placed in columns on board or connected to a chain. Each column represents a multiple of 10; to produce the number634 you would place 6 beads in the 100's column, 3 accounts in the10 of the column and 4 beads in the 1's column. By adding and deductingbeads you can quickly and accurately perform relatively complexcalculations without having to try and keep all the numbers in yourhead as you do so.
