How do I obtain a CPIM certification?

I have been seeking for a job in the production and supply industry for a while but I have not yet been successful. I hold a bachelor’s degree in business administration but I have heard that I need to attain CPIM certification to become more marketable. Therefore, I am looking for information on the importance of this course to my future career so I can make a decision on whether to enroll for the exams. I would also like to know how much money it would cost me to attain an APICS certification.

The Certificate in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) is a certification course run by The Association for Operations Management (APICS). There are other production and supply certification offered by other bodies but CPIM is highly reputable and the most common among many professionals in this industry. It has helped shape the industry by enhancing workforce skills and performance in the job.

This program will enhance your career in the following ways:

  • It will improve your employability.
  • Help you understand market and business environment better.
  • Put you in a position to negotiate better pay with your potential employer.
  • Give you an understanding of how new technology affects production.
  • Equip you with relevant production management skills that can help you in starting your own business in future.

For you to be cpim certified you must sit for two examinations. Apics also require that you refresh your certification every five years through their designated maintenance program. You can purchase the course study material for about $1250 online through the apics website. Test fees have to be paid separately. Below is a list of the course modules offered under this program:

  • Basics of Supply Chain Management.

This course provides a base or foundation for understanding how the business world functions.

  • Master Planning of Resources.

This shows you how you can practically apply demand and supply principles in planning and distributing of resources.

  • Detailed Scheduling and Planning.

It helps you to know how you can apply resource/inventory planning techniques and strategies that you have learned in the previous modules in the work environment.

  • Execution and Control of Operations.

This gives you the technical know how to apply operational plans, provide solutions for resource problems and implement corrective measures to improve production operations.

  • Strategic Management of Resources.

This will equip you with higher knowledge and experience on new issues and technology that drive market dynamics for decision-making.

You will sit for the two exams in the following ways:

  • The first exam is after completion of the first module I have listed above which accounts for the first part of the course.
  • The final test will cover the remaining four modules.

If you truly commit your time and focus on this course, you might be able to finish in about four to six months. Moreover, you should note that when you become an APICS PLUS member you will make significant savings when purchasing course material or paying for the examination.

This response is very elaborate and I can only add a little bit of information to help you become APICS certified. The program offers three modes of learning that you can choose from depending on your preference and lifestyle:

  1. Studying yourself. You can choose this mode if you have a busy lifestyle. This means you can read at your own time then sit for the tests. Apics provides a system where you can access the program materials. This method will also be cheaper as you will not pay for classes.
  2. Study online with college support. Apics has collaborated with Fox Valley Technical College to offer cpim. It offers easy to understand study materials as well as online classes and study workshops.
  3. Register for classes for recognized instructors. There are qualified instructors both in US and in other countries across the globe allowed by Apics to offer classes.
