How do I know which APICS certification is right for me?

APICS has worldwide recognition as the leading provider of certifications in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics, Management. My career includes most of these areas. Therefore, it would be a great advantage for me to get any of these certifications. The challenge is the fact that I have no idea which APICS certification would be best for me. I have tried using different types of tests and look for job assessment test answers to figure out which skills I am particularly good at so as to build on them but nothing seems to give me a clear direction.

Getting a certification in an area gives you a great advantage especially when you are looking for a job. This is because certifications validate your expertise in the body of knowledge that is covered by the specific certification. In fact, most employers are more impressed by candidates who are certified compared to those who give great answers in job assessment tests.

You are right APICS certifications are recognized throughout the world. Getting certified in any of the areas covered by APICS will without a doubt give you a competitive advantage in the job market and improve your chances of getting promoted at your current company. The challenge for most people is always in choosing the right certification. To determine which certification would suit you the best, you need to determine what your career focus is and where you want to be in your career in the next 5 to 10 years.

If your focus is on inventory, purchasing, planning or management and scheduling of products and services, the best certification for you would be a certification in Product and Inventory Management. This certification will equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to effectively manage all internal processes at your company.

If your job focus is on customer or supplier relationships, supply chain management, money and materials or flow of information in the company you should consider getting certified as a supply chain professional. This certification will give you the skills you need to make your company’s supply chain more competitive and effective.

Lastly, if your focus is on moving materials, finished goods and different components that your company works with, the best certification for you would be a certification in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution. This certification will improve your transportation and logistics capabilities, warehouse and distribution processes and facilities.

As you can see, the only way to determine the right certification for you is to focus on your job responsibilities and where you want to go in your career in the future. Doing different types of tests will not help. However, do not limit yourself to just one type of certification. Having more than one certification by APICS will give you even more advantages in the job market. However, make sure that each certification you do is in line with your career goals and ambitions. It might help to do some research to determine whether or not a certification is related to your job in case you are not sure.

I work as an instructor and this is one of the most commonly asked questions I get. Most employers would like to know which certifications would suit their employees the most. I have always suggested that the employees look into the areas where their company would benefit the most from if skills and expertise were improved. This has always worked great. Another advice I would give anyone considering to get an APICS certification is to attend the free webinars offered by the company. The webinars are really beneficial when you are confused about which certification to get. They provide more details on each certification and who should get each. Everyone who registers also gets free recorded presentations and answers to frequently asked questions which help you make an informed decision. Talking to your employer might also help you make the right choice especially if they are also certified in any of the areas.

It is absolutely true that certifications are very important for employers when they are selecting staff members. Having an APICS certification can make a big difference in your CV if you are looking forward to working for one of the companies of the area, since it increases your chances of being hired. And if you are already working in a company, you can improve your knowledge or take different types of tests in order to get several certifications that will allow you to work in other departments of the company if you wish to change later.
