Energy efficient homes work the same way as any other home - power is delivered by utilities (electricity, gas, water, sewer service) and is consumed by the house. The difference is the amount of energy consumed - an energy efficient home uses much less energy (which means that the tickets are cheaper for the owner of the house). Some of the things that change include the amount and quality of insulation (it tends to be much higher), windows tend to be double glazing with an insulating layer of air between the panels, the appliances are high efficiency and the water heater tends to be a demand without a tank system.
