Bacteria divide by binary fission, which simply means that a cell splits in two. As a separate matter, there is a process called "conjugation" for transfer of genetic information that is completely different than binary fission . The conjugation bacterial occurs between bacterial cells by direct cell-to-cell contact or through a bridge of material between two cells. The genetic material is transferred in this process.
