How can I develop good study habits?

I do not enjoy studying. In fact, I only study when I have exams around the corner. However, I would like to develop good study habits because I have noticed my current study habits are not helping me maintain good grades. I have tried using study tools for college students and getting study tips from study guide websites but nothing seems to be helping. I would like practical and easy guidelines on how to develop effective habits of studying. I am ready to commit to a new approach so that I can improve my school performance.

Whenever you are trying to develop a new habit, you need to understand that it takes time to develop a habit and that you will need to be consistent in order to make the habit stick. Therefore, when you are trying to develop good studying habits you need to be patient and consistent.

Using a study guide website and College students’ study tools does not work for everyone because every person has different study methods that work for them. You need to identify one that works for you so that you can get the best results. Nonetheless, there are certain tips and tricks you can use that will help you improve your study habits. These include:

  • Create a Plan

Before you start studying, it is very important to know exactly what you are going to study. This is important because it prevents you from wasting time. In addition to this, it allows you to focus on one thing during your study session which improves your understanding. Your study plan should include the time you will begin studying, how long you will study and what you will study. You should also include breaks in your plan so that you can have some time to rest before you move on to the next topic.

  • Choose the Right Environment

It is possible that you are not getting the most out of your study sessions because you are studying in the wrong place. You need to choose an environment that is not only free from distractions but also comfortable enough. It is also important to make sure that you have everything you need in your study space such as books, writing material and other things you need to study.

  • Try Different Study Methods

The only way to know what will work for you is by trying new things. You can try joining a discussion group, using flash cards, reading out loud instead of silent reading, drawing diagrams, creating mental associations or using study applications. Use one study method for some time before moving on to the next one and compare how different methods work for you. Choose the method that works best and stick it for the best results.

  • Study Frequently

Do not study only when you have examinations around the corner.  Study even when you do not have examinations. It is better to study on a daily basis especially on the topics you do not understand. This will help you retain the knowledge and perform better in examinations.

I agree. Mastering good study habits requires time and consistency. If you ask me, I think you should be very patient when you are trying to improve your performance. It will not happen overnight. Therefore, when you begin trying out different study methods, do not beat yourself up when it doesn’t reflect in your performance. Just keep doing what you are doing and eventually, you will begin seeing amazing changes. I would also advise you to seek assistance from your instructors especially in the subjects you struggle with the most. Teachers are always ready to help their students get better. They can offer you practical tips on how to improve your performance and can even go as far as offering you tutoring sessions if you need the extra push. It might also be a good idea to seek help from the students who perform well in your class, they can help you study and share their studying tips with you.
