The best answer is D. Facilitated diffusion is a channel-mediated diffusion, and works as a bridge over a river that must raise and lower to allow boats to pass. When the bridge was low, the boats can not move to the other side of the river. In a similar way, a closed channel often stays closed, not allowing the substances in the cell until it receives a signal (such as the binding of an ion) to open. When this signal is received, the bridge (the door opens, allowing the boats (substance) to pass through the bridge and on the other side of the river (cell membrane)
