The answer is that the fusion reactions occur between the small atoms. Fusion reactions are a type of nuclear reaction where nuclei of two atoms fuse and a different shape of atom around a new kernel, This is only possible with small atoms. For example, the nuclear fusion rection that occurs in the Sun, especially between the two H atoms that form an atom of He. This reaction releases an enormous amount of energy (nuclear energy).
