Geographic literacy is important in much the same way that "literacy" in general is important. It is a sign (pretty good) to their level of education. If someone is taking about Portugal, for example, and say something that indicates that you think that Portugal is in Asia, it's going to look stupid. No one will talk to you about something serious. Knowing where each one of the countries in the world would be a lot to ask of anyone, but having "geographic literacy" means that you should be able to at least get the right continent every time someone expected to know about in a country that is located. Also, for countries that are or have been in the news a lot, you should know where they are. If you are an American (united states), has a great advantage. The united states goes a little bit everywhere! I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and say they are going to conquer the world, but they do send troops and aid to a lot of places.
