The first day of summer in Australia is December 1. The summer months are December, January and February, as they are for the rest of the southern hemisphere. The reason the seasons are opposite those in the northern hemisphere is due to the axial tilt of the Earth. Because the Earth is tilted on its axis, the southern hemisphere has summer when it is tilted toward the Sun, while the northern hemisphere has winter at that time, because it is tilted away from the Sun.
