Do Harvard online services offer short courses for entrepreneurs?

I am interested in pursuing online higher education in business management. Having done a non-related undergraduate degree, I have no prior knowledge or experience in successfully running a small business. I have come across many free distance learning courses on the internet but I am more keen on courses offered by reputable higher institutions. Moreover, I do not want to waste my time on courses that will not give me relevant skills. Do Harvard online services offer short courses that will help me manage and grow my business?

I agree that there are many distance learning courses for free littered all over the internet. However, whether free or not there is no need to take up a course that will not cater to your specific needs.

  • Before you choose an online course ask yourself the following questions:
  • What specific skills am I looking for?
  • What are my business needs?
  • What are the short-term and long-term goals for my business?
  • What is my study budget?
  • How much time am I willing to put into this?
  • What result am I expecting after taking up this course?

As an entrepreneur there are many skills and expertise that you will require to effectively run your business venture. This are both general entrepreneurial skills and skill specifically tailored to your specific business niche.

Some business related short courses offered by Harvard online service are:

  • HBX Becoming a Better Manager.

This is an effective management course that consists of 35 learning hours spread over a 6-week period. The learning system is highly adjustable for your preference. This course will equip you with decision-making, management, planning and organization skills. Harvard Business School and HBX awards a certificate on full completion of the course.

  • HBX Entrepreneurship Essentials.

This is an introductory course for someone who is planning to start a successful business. It is still relevant to you as your business is new. It guides you through the process of establishing a business from conceiving a viable business idea to making a name for yourself in your niche market. This course takes about four weeks with 20 hours of study material.

  • HBX Leading with Finance.

This course gives you financial skills to manage your business. By understanding the guiding principles of finance in business, you will be able to make sound financial decisions for your business. This course is divided into 6 modules that will take you about 35 learning hours spread over a 6-week duration.

  • Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies.

This course efficiently helps the learner in identifying viable business opportunities that give solutions to current societal problems. You will learn about the efforts that has been made in trying to solve these issues. In essence, if you want to succeed in business you must identify a gap you can fill or a situation you can address. This is a good higher education online course as it is free and no credentials are required for application.

These are relevant courses that you may undertake to better manage your new venture. I would however like to point out that a good online higher ed course isn’t necessarily gauged on its affiliation with a well-known institution. An excellent institution such as Harvard may give you a good base for employment but if you want to take up a course to better your business look for the following aspects.

  • The course modules.

Don’t just look at the name of the course. What’s important are the modules. Make sure that the modules/topics are relevant to current business dynamics and advancements in technology.

  • The expected value.

You should consider a course that is worth your time and money. It should give you practical and applicable business skills.

  • The success rate.

This is an evaluation of the existing cases of successful implementation of the course in the establishment and/or running of businesses.
