Federal Pell Grants do not have to be repaid once the student completes the academic year in which the award was granted. Federal grants are free money (federal need based gift aid) awarded to students to assist them in the access to higher education at the undergraduate level. If a student receives a Pell grant but fails to attend or withdraws from the educational program is intended to be used for, you will be required to pay back all the money that were given to them for the duration that the grant money has not been used to. The Pell grant is awarded to cover the expenses to attend university, and this payment system is in place to prevent people from taking advantage of the grant money for other purposes.
