This depends on the Jurisdiction you are in. In some places, technically, you only have to be "Called to the bar." In the united states, almost all states require you to pass the bar exam. And most states require that you have a degree in law from an accredited law school in order to qualify to take the exam. There are some states that will allow you to take the exam if you have worked under the direction of a licensed attorney for a period of time, usually at least 5 years.
