Can I do Stanford online masters without the need to visit the campus?

I am a working person. So I am interested in pursuing my master’s online. Some of my friends suggested that there are Stanford online masters degree programs at Stanford University which are offered online through the Honors Cooperative Program (HCP). Is it true? Is the program delivered through college online class? Is it easy for a working person to pursue  Stanford online degrees and Stanford online certificates? If available, what master’s programs are there and what are the prerequisites to join them? How much time will I need to invest if I join?

Your question is rather complex, considering the way Stanford offers its master’s programs. The university does not offer an online course to all but it does offer the same to working professionals through the Honors Cooperative Program (HCP). The process of applying for Stanford online master’s under the HCP is the same as that for full-time students.

Now, regarding the way the classes are delivered, it is difficult to say what classes are offered online and which are provided on-campus. According to the university website, many, but not all, classes are offered online. To check what classes are offered online, it is necessary to check the Stanford Center for Professional Development’s course offerings. The sad reality is that the class offerings change from quarter to quarter, making it difficult to say what classes will be available online. According to the university website FAQ section, precisely, “while the majority of any degree can be completed online, certain programs may require some on-campus attendance. This depends heavily on your program plan, area of focus, and the course offerings for any given academic quarter.” Anyway, you will have 5 years of time to complete your degree by covering 45 units.

From the university website, it is clear that HCP program MS degrees are available in Aeronautics and Astronautics, Biomedical Informatics, Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Management Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Statistics.

If you pursue a particular MS degree, you will have to complete at least 45 course units according to an approved academic plan, and the way the classes are delivered will depend on the courses you need to complete. For example, in MS Computer Science, all the courses are delivered online as of now, but it can change in future. However, if you go for MS in Electrical Engineering, some of the courses are delivered only at Stanford. Therefore, doing a Stanford online degree and securing a Stanford online certificate requires some research into the program, its content, and the way the courses will be delivered in that quarter. The problem with Stanford master’s programs is that the way courses are delivered and their availability can change from quarter to quarter. The best thing you can do if you want to pursue an MS from Stanford is to visit the website of the university and find what courses offering online class are available and when and then make a plan accordingly.

An MS degree from Stanford is a rather complex business and more expensive as well but it is worth trying for many reasons. Firstly, your resume looks great with this brand name, and what happens in reality is that people, including potential employers, will listen to whatever you say
carefully. That means, whenever there is a competition, you have a competitive advantage over other candidates from cheaper schools. I can tell you that the atmosphere at Stanford is full of high achievers who work to their full potential. This will motivate you to think differently and work sincerely. In addition, the network and contacts you make at Stanford will be more useful in your future life.

This university fills your mind with the ‘can do’ attitude, enabling you to think differently and act confidently. Obviously, this makes you more entrepreneurial in nature, and you know very well how important this attitude is. Just go ahead with your plan for the Stanford online masters.

Yes the Stanford online masters is available online. I agree that it is a highly reputable program that you would like to have prominently displayed on your CV. When the program has components that have to be taken on campus, you will be duly informed on the site. As you will realize, it is easier to get a master’s degree online than it is to get a bachelor’s. That is because the master’s is mainly a research based program. The same applies to the Stanford degree online programs. The online degree is as much recognized as the one earned on campus.
