That’s How Students Can Get All 4 Years Of Education For Free In 20 States

Needless to say, attending a college is an expensive thing no matter which country you are from. Fortunately, it looks like there are more and more states try to adapt differently scholarship programs. As a result, it should increase the number of students attending college for free.

State Community College

Emily Buckner is a volunteer from State Community College. Emily told that, in addition to the state funding, she relied solely on academic scholarships. It let the student pay for tuition. Thanks to a part-time job she has no student loan debt.

“I know a lot of people go to college and a lot of people don’t,” she said, “I just felt like it was for me.”

Tennessee Promise

Basically, Tennessee Promise is the program which helped Emily and many other students. According to the statistics, of all the students who started in the program’s first year, more than 50% have been successful. To say more, over 20% already graduated. And another 20% are still enrolled when 10% successfully transferred to a four-year institution.

“There are students that may have counted themselves out and when they hear that you can go for free that provides a sense of momentum,” says Mike Krause, the executive director of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and founding director of Tennessee Promise.

With it, US students can use the scholarship at any of the state’s 13 community colleges or other eligible associate degree programs or vocational schools.

Other states have also rolled out statewide free community-college programs and more are expected to follow. The list includes:

  • Arkansas
  • Indiana
  • Minnesota
  • Montana
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
