Are there any tips you can give on how to boost self esteem?

I just started a new job and I feel like my self esteem at work is not enough to make my performance at work be noticed not only by my boss but also my co-workers. I have already been here for a couple of months so I’d like to know how to raise self esteem in the workplace. Are there any books or online resources you know on how to build your self esteem or how to boost self esteem like this one from Psychology Today as I feel this might be affecting my future success at my chosen work.

I’m a personal development trainer for companies, and I have worked with a lot of new workers having issues with self-esteem at work, especially for those who are just starting out in a new job. There are several factors in building your self-confidence in the workplace, and one of them is just believing in yourself and what you can bring to the table. I don’t know how small or big your company is, but sometimes this is a factor, as some people are more comfortable working in a bigger company, while some find themselves thriving in a work environment where there are fewer people in the office.

If you cannot take a formal course in personality development, I suggest some reading materials that are available online on building your self-esteem like this one also from Psychology Today which I usually recommend to my students who have taken my course. You don’t have to read this all at once, but you can just read through a few sections per day while being on the commute or spending free time. There are also forums online for people who are just starting in the workplace like this and you can read through stories of other people who are also looking how to raise their self esteem. You can share your stories with other people who are also struggling with having self confidence and share tips with each other.

Since your issue of boosting self esteem is directly related to your work, I suggest that you also talk to your HR or employee relations person if you are already comfortable enough to talk to them. This can open a dialogue between you and your employers as to what issues are confronting their employees in the workplace. Have you already made friends with any of your co-workers? I also suggest trying to befriend even one of them as having someone to talk to in the workplace can also make it a more conducive place for you.

Being a newbie at work is really not easy, although I have fairly built my self-confidence over the years, I also struggled with self-esteem issues when I was younger and relatively new at work. But with years of work, being exposed to more people and also the things I have learned in my line of work, I have slowly become more self-confident when it came to my career.
