Are there any test taking tips that can help me get a better score on tests?

I have been making efforts to improve my school performance. One of the things I have done is develop effective study skills. I have also learned how to study maths because this is the subject that gives me the most trouble. However, I am still experiencing challenges while doing my tests. When doing my tests, I get afraid of running out of time. This causes me to panic which makes it hard for me to focus on the exam. I think good and effective test taking tips will really help me manage this and hopefully perform better in tests.

Learning how to study Mathematics and developing effective studying skills is not enough if you want to get a better score on your exams. You also need to know how to approach the test so that you can get the best score possible.

Some effective tips for test taking include:

  • Start with difficult questions: Difficult questions require more time because you need to think through the question and decide how to answer. Starting with these questions will improve your chances of completing the paper on time since you will not need to spend as much time on the easy questions. However, if you do not know the answer to the question, it is advisable to skip it and move on to a question you understand so that you do not waste
    too much time.
  • Have all the materials you need: Make sure you have everything you need before going into the exam room. These include things like pens, a calculator, eraser and any other material you might need.
  • Bring a watch: A watch will help you pace yourself and it will enable you to know how much time you have left. This enables you to assign enough time to each section so that you can complete the paper on time.
  • Relax: Do not panic. Trust that you are well prepared for the test and believe you can do it. Do not look around the classroom or let anything to distract you because this can cause you to panic especially if you start losing time.
  • Do questions with highest points first: If your goal is to get a high score on your paper, you need to ensure you have done all the questions that carry high points first. This is important because it ensures you have accumulated a lot of points even if you run out of time.
  • Ensure Your Handwriting is Legible: Most instructors do not waste time on illegible papers. You might end up getting a low score simply because your answers were not legible. To avoid this, write very well and ensure your handwriting is easy to read. It might help to do some practice before the test so that you can decide which handwriting is best.
  • Make sure to include your name: The last thing you want is to lose your score because you did not include your name. Make sure your name is the first thing you write so that you do not forget.

All these test taking tips are very important and they will without a doubt help you do your best in every test. However, there are two things you can do that will not only improve your ability to do tests well but also increase your confidence when taking tests. First and foremost, try doing as many practice tests on your own as possible. This will give you some insight on how different tests are set, how many questions each test contains and how much time you will be given for each test. Practicing will enable you to improve your use of time and it will definitely improve your confidence during the test because you will already know what to expect. The other thing that will help you improve is working on all your weak subjects. Identify the topics that give you the most trouble during tests and study them until you understand. This will boost your confidence during the test since you will not experience so many difficulties.
