Are self development books useful?

I am planning to join a multinational firm where I can have a chance to learn further along with the job. I have noticed that good companies give much attention to the personality of the candidates when they recruit new people. How can I find areas of personal development? I would like to know if there are books which can help me learn self development skills and meet my personal development objectives. Also, please mention the names of a few books which are useful in self development.

Well, if you want to leave no stone unturned, it is important to groom your personality as well. In the employment sector, you only get very limited time to impress the interviewer in an interview. Therefore, only extraordinary ones catch their attention. To groom your personality, you can use a number of ways, ranging from books on self development, tips from the internet, and even various personality development classes.

The benefits of reading self-help books are plenty. For example, it is a type of self-acceptance. In other words, it is a way for you to understand yourself fully: your abilities, disabilities, likes, dislikes, temperaments, the good, the bad, and the ugly. This enables you to accept yourself and live a happy life. The second obvious benefit is that you learn to handle conflicts effectively.

Yes, conflicts are common in the workplace and you are highly likely to face them almost every day in your work life. In fact, many people are very poor at handling conflicts and this inability affects their personal happiness and career prospects. Effective self-development books will help you identify the different self-help skills required in different personal development areas, including conflict resolution.

Well, that is not the end. You learn many other useful things like how to prioritize things in your life, because it is a reality that you can’t achieve everything. Books on personal development will give you the insight to take effective decisions in this regard, and you will face no difficulty identifying what are the most important things in your life on which you should spend your time and energy. Some other benefits of reading such books are increased happiness in life, the ability to appreciate others, better ability to handle difficult situations, less anxiety, and, as a result of all these, more satisfaction in life. You can find a large number of personal development and self-help books on the bookstands. Some of them which caught my attention are ‘The Success Principles’ by Jack Canfield, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill, ‘The Power of Positive Thinking’ by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell, ‘Getting Things Done’ by David Allen, ‘The Power of Full Engagement’ by Jim Leohr and Tony Schwartz, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie, ‘The 4-Hour Workweek’ by Timothy Ferris, ‘Crush It!’ by Gary Vaynerchuk, and ‘Let Go!’ by Pat Flynn. As I mentioned, the list is too long. Each of them will teach you the strategies required for self development in different areas and enable you to set self development goals effectively.

Your decision to use self development books is good because you can see unimaginable improvement in your attitude towards life. My mother passed away in a car accident a few years ago, when I was 16. As a teenage girl, I was very much close to and dependent on my mother. Her sudden death was a severe shock for me. It was pitch dark everywhere; there was no one to help me socially, emotionally and financially. I felt total depression and confusion in my life because it was my mother who used to take every decision for me. It was one of those days that I came across The Power of Positive Thinking by Dr. Normal Vincent Peale. That book helped me enormously. I learnt how to avoid past experiences coloring my perceptions and how to stay focused and motivated by removing the fear and the feeling of loneliness which used to haunt me after my mother’s death.

In order to achieve growth, self development books can play a significant role. Some of the greatest authors of our time have written inspiring tales about their lives or someone else’s life, which are meant to nourish readers and guide them through the direction or path they’re traveling on.

Paulo Coelho's, The Alchemist, is my all-time favorite. This really moves me. It has helped me to point out specific areas of personal development that I need to put my focus on. That changed my perspective on so many things.
