Robert Stephenson was one of George Stephenson's brothers; another was James. All were interested to a greater or lesser extent in locomotive driving and construction in the verye arliest days of steam railways in the north east of England. George also had a son Robert, who was distinguished as, if not more, than his father, building the Britannia Tubular Bridge over the Straits of Menai, as part of its work in the construction of Chester and Train from Holyhead (1848). Just to confuse matters, George had a nephew, George Robert Stephenson who was also a raiwlay engineer of repute.
