The construction of the Aswan Dam in Egypt has provided many benefits, but they have a cost. The benefits include the creation of Lake Nasser, one of the largest artificial lakes; the production of hydroelectric power for the supply of 15 percent or more of the Egyptians of the energy needs; and the elimination of unpredictable seasonal floods. The costs associated with the dam include the displacement of thousands of the inhabitants of the Nile Valley in Egypt and the Sudan; the reduction of the deposits of fertile soil, which has changed species of native plants and requires the use of more artificial fertilisers in agricultural production; and the billions of dollars price tag for the construction of the dam.
