A major limitation of naturalistic observation in the study of human behavior is that external variables outside the researcher's control that might compromise the validity of the study. A naturalistic observation study consists in observing and studying the behavior of the participants in their natural environment, no manipulation of the variables. While naturalistic observations have advantages such as avoiding the bias of social desirability and experimenter effects, its main disadvantage is that the external variables can lead to the dependent variables, reducing the validity of the study.
