The chemical formula of a carbonate ion is CO3^2-. It is an AX3 system which means that the trigonal planar shape. There would be two single bonds C-O and double bond C-O in the order of C according to the rule of octet. Two less of the fees are distributed equally to the three oxygen atoms, so each oxygen of the carbonate ion have a negative charge at the 2/3.
