The reaction is shown below, the Acid protonates the carbonyl oxygen and makes the carbonyl carbon more electrophilic. The water attacks the activated carbonyl group and form a tetrahedral intermediate.Intermediate: the Structure of the Intermediate is shown in both 2-D and 3-D (below attached). Carbonyl group is regenerated with the removal of the ethanol.The reaction is as follows, the final product is The carboxylic acid.
